English is used at many levels and for different purposes in Singapore. It is the common language that facilitates communication among different ethnic and cultural groups in Singapore. At the global level, English is probably the most commonly used language for science, technology, and international trade. A proficiency in English will allow our students to understand and make use of information, and communicate with different communities both within and beyond Singapore.

The English Department aims to equip students with the ability to communicate effectively in English. There are various programmes to develop reading, listening, speaking and viewing skills in students. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is an important tool to develop these skills in students. For instance, students can digitally record their presentations for review and feedback, produce short films and mini-documentaries, debate through social networking sites and keep abreast of news through reviews of online news sites. There are also opportunities for students to engage in role-play, performances, story-telling, poetry writing and debates.
