Mission
Developing passion through exploration

Broad Strategy:

  • To achieve academic excellence in science curriculum, by providing a conducive and learner-centered environment, using innovative & engaging pedagogies for enduring understanding of Science.
  • To equip science teachers with curriculum knowledge and pedagogical skills through mentoring, peer coaching, professional development sharing and reflection.
  • To make science fun and relevant in our lives.

At GSS, we believe that every child is capable but is at different stage of cognitive maturity and readiness for Science education.

We believe in the importance of acquiring scientific knowledge and skills as well as a good knowledge foundation for Science.

As such, we have in place a comprehensive 4-year GSS Science curriculum and enrichment programmes that ensure pupils develop

a strong foundation in Science by addressing their needs at different stage of cognitive development.

The new GSS Science curriculum is based on the ‘O’ Level Examination syllabus. It provides pupils the opportunity to

  • Explore their thinking and satisfy their curiosity Science,
  • Learn and practice scientific thinking skills through inquiry,
  • Apply scientific concepts to understand themselves and the world around them,
  • Develop scientific skills and attitudes necessary for scientific inquiry,
  • Use scientific knowledge in making personal decisions.

Innovative curriculum and customized teaching and learning strategies to cater to different needs of pupils:

  • banding of pupils according to academic ability,
  • customized graded worksheet to reinforce learning,
  • additional teacher to provide better coaching during practical sessions for lower secondary N(A) & N(T) classes,
  • weekly hands-on practical sessions to develop scientific inquiry skills,
  • structured monitoring system to ensure pupils check their understanding through weekly worksheet,
  • use of technology and video to enhance learning experience,
  • science clinics to address pupils with weaker academic performance,
  • structured level test & remediation to identify misconception at earliest possible time,
  • formative assessment to take check understanding on regular basis,
  • customized 4 year science curriculum to maximize learning for all pupils

Enrichment

Lower Secondary

  • Life Science Workshop
  • Datalogger Workshop for 1E & 2E students
  • Learning Journey to the Singapore Science Centre
  • Science Enrichment Day as Post-exam activities for sec 2E students (in collaboration with other depts as an inter-disciplinary project).
  • Introduction to SPA skills as part of Bridging Programme for Sec 2 Express pupils selected for Pure Science.
  • Cluster West 6 Science Enrichment Day (during March holiday)
  • PET Rocket Competition

Upper Secondary

  • Peer-tutoring
  • Sabbatical @ HCl
  • Chemistry Enrichment Workshop @ Singapore Poly (eg. Polymers)
  • Chemistry Enrichment Workshop @ JJC
  • Learning Journey to Jurong Island (visiting Petrochemical industry)
  • Science Enrichment Workshop at Singapore Science Centre (during June holiday)

Curriculum Innovations

4 Year Modular System

  • Chemistry and Physics (starting with 2009 Sec 1 cohort)
  • In the Modular System, Sec 1 pupils are stretched using Sec 3 Sc(Chem) syllabus, using Sec 3 textbook and customized graded worksheet.
  • Pupils will be grounded with stronger foundation in their early years of Science education in secondary school.

Play and Learn Chemistry Flash Card Project

  • Sets of cards, containing 100 cards (100 questions and answers) per topic are used as a fun tool to help memory retention in a near effortless process. The cards can be played in a variety of ways
  • Problem solving in tests or examinations requires one to recall facts and formulae. Studying requires accumulative storage of facts in long-term memory for necessary retrieval in midst of tests or examination.  Regular revision (relearning) is a process of moving information from the short-term memory to long-term memory.
  • Scientific research has shown that flashcards is one of the best way to accomplish this task with lesser effort during revision.
  • Learning must be fun and stimulating.  After learning the cards using Leitner system approach, pupils will gather in small groups to quiz each others.  Peer pressure and the desire to win will spur pupils to work hard in remembering the facts.  Studying is no longer viewed as boring and dry, but rather fun and exciting.

The iMVT II Project:

  • It is a collaboration project between Greenridge Secondary Science Department and the Learning Sciences Laboratory (LSL) of National Institute of Education, together with four other schools.
  • Aim : Sustaining and Scaling up Inquiry-based Science Learning through Modeling and Visualization Technologies
  • Conduct research into how deep student learning can be enhanced with new technological tools
  • iMVT represents:
    • Collaborative inquirybased pedagogy to address student learning difficulties
    • Modeling approach to represent and construct understanding of science phenomena as complex systems
    • Visualization to simulate abstract and invisible interactions (e.g. particle level interaction during chemistry reactions)
    • Use of Technologies
